Google Campfire One – Apps Marketplace Launched

So we’re obviously really excited about the Google Apps™ product and last night at the Campfire One we got even more good news!

Google Campfire One is a developer conference for people working on the Google Platform. Video Below

Besides sharing with us some more of their clients and how many businesses have #GoneGoogle they released the Google Apps Marketplace. For the developers this makes it much easier to provide quality products that interoperate very very well together. For all of you users out there this means that there are a TON of great tools coming to you on your existing platform!

Here at Computer System Works, LLC we really want to help you be more flexible, productive and quality focused. We do this by helping you remove redundant work: the stuff where your eyes begin to cross, your fingers get tired and human error creeps in. This new Marketplace helps us do this even better.

We plan on going through a number of these apps, spending some quality time with them to learn more about how to properly use, or not use them. If there is a particular Google App that you would like to have reviewed let us know so we can move it up our list! In the mean time here are a couple of tools that caught our eye and we want to share:

In the last post we mentioned that Google™ wants to push the envelope a bit more and start offering new and faster features through Google Apps™. This means they want to use the new HTML5 specification – are you ready?
If your using Firefox 3.5 (or greater), Chrome, Opera or Safari you should be ready to go and can skip these tests. If you aren’t sure what your using or if your browser can handle it, try going to the following websites and see if anything breaks.

http://twinkler.in/ (should feel somewhat organic, you can move around and see relationships between twitter folk)
http://9elements.com/io/projects/html5/canvas/ (should seem like a interactive screen saver with each dot representing a tweet)
http://html5gallery.com/2009/06/karrun/ (should be able to drag elements around)
http://informationhighwayman.com/ (more mainstream site using html5)

If you need to update your browser and don’t know where to find one:

To get Mozilla Firefox (recommended)
To get Google Chrome (very good but some older IE only sites have issues)
To get Opera
To get Apple Safari (also recommended)

You may be wondering where Microsoft Internet Explorer is on this list? It’s not, while every browser and every computer has numerous security vulnerabilities, oddities, and is probably missing a bit of something – Internet Explorer is very much behind the rest. We do not recommend using it unless it is necessary for the particular page you are trying to view (which is rare).

Recently, at Black Hat DC conference, a security consultant (Jorge Luis Alvarez Medina) demoed how it’s possible to exploit a flaw in Internet Explorer browser that turns your personal computer into a public file server. In other words, attacker can remotely read files on the victim’s local drive.

Google Apps™ Browser Requirements

Google Apps™ is trying to roll out new and better features and part of that process includes using the newly approved HTML 5 spec. What this means to you is that your old web browser may or may not support these features. Google™ will be adding a notification to your accounts if you need to make a change to use the service properly.

If your using Firefox, Google Chrome™ or Safari you shouldn’t have any issues. If your using Internet Explorer it may ask you to update to the latest version with more security features and capabilities for handling the best and newest web apps out there!

Here is the communication I received:

Dear Google Apps™ admin,?

In order to continue to improve our products and deliver more sophisticated features and performance, we are harnessing some of the latest improvements in web browser technology. This includes faster JavaScript processing and new standards like HTML5. As a result, over the course of 2010, we will be phasing out support for Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 as well as other older browsers that are not supported by their own manufacturers.

We plan to begin phasing out support of these older browsers on the Google Docs™ suite and the Google Sites™ editor on March 1, 2010. After that point, certain functionality within these applications may have higher latency and may not work correctly in these older browsers. Later in 2010, we will start to phase out support for these browsers for Google Mail™ and Google Calendar™.

Google Apps™ will continue to support Internet Explorer 7.0 and above, Firefox 3.0 and above, Google Chrome™ 4.0 and above, and Safari 3.0 and above.

Starting next week, users on these older browsers will see a message in Google Docs™ and the Google Sites™ editor explaining this change and asking them to upgrade their browser. We will also alert you again closer to March 1 to remind you of this change.

In 2009, the Google Apps™ team delivered more than 100 improvements to enhance your product experience. We are aiming to beat that in 2010 and continue to deliver the best and most innovative collaboration products for businesses.
